Conceived as a follow-up to the legendary Monsters of Rock festival, which ran from 1980 to 1996 at Donington Park, the first Download Festival took place on 31st May and 1st June 2003 with the mighty Iron Maiden headlining the opening night and Audioslave topping the bill on the Sunday.
