In 1960, Walter Orr Roberts was chosen by trustees from the 14 founding universities to serve as UCAR’s first president. Today, the president is still chosen by the Board of Trustees and is given the responsibility for creating, promoting, and executing a shared community vision.

NCAR is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research. NCAR has received funding approval to survey prospective locations for the Coronal Solar Magnetism Observatory (COSMO).

Who is Weerasinghe at UCAR?

Weerasinghe joined UCAR in 2021 from the Union of Concerned Scientists, where he served as the senior manager of government affairs. He previously worked for seven years on the staff of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.
