How do I setup a wireless repeater for tomatoes?
- Wireless Mode = Access Point + WDS.
- Wireless Network Mode = G Only, or N Only (it must match the other device)
- Security = WPA Personal or WPA2 Personal.

- Next to ‘Mac Address’ enter the wireless MAC address of your secondary router.

A Wireless Distribution System (WDS) is a system that enables the wireless interconnection of access points (APs) in a network. WDS allows a wireless network to be expanded using multiple access points without the need for a wired backbone to link them.

Each router has been flashed with a Tomato mod, built by ‘Shibby’. Set the IP address to say 192.168.1.1. Enable DHCP and assign an IP address range of say, 192.168.100~149. Then, scroll down to the Wireless area. For this example, we will configure the 2.4Ghz band in WDS mode. Wireless = checked. Wireless Network Mode = G Only, N Only, etc.
Does Tomato Firmware offer a wireless repeater mode?
Some routers offer a “client” or “bridge” mode. Others offer a “repeater” mode. And then there is WDS. Currently, Tomato firmware does not offer a wireless repeater mode. However, it does offer a ‘Access Point + WDS’ mode, which does virtually the same thing. Access Point mode is used for a basic wireless access point.
What are the different types of WDS?
Technically speaking, there are two types of WDS modes, ‘ Wireless Bridge ‘ and ‘ Wireless Repeater ‘. A WDS bridge is designed to communicate only with other Access Points and does not allow for other wireless clients to access them. In this case, there is only one wireless link (the link between the two access points).
